MISSION

 

The Cape Brandy Distillers Guild serves to promote, uplift and preserve the integrity of the Cape Potstill Brandy category in South Africa, underpinned by legal recognition.

CRITERIA

 

To be classified as a Cape Brandy, a brandy must be:

  • Produced from grapes grown in the Cape Wine Regions of South Africa
  • 100% Double Pot Still Distilled
  • Minimum of 38% alcohol by volume
  • Aged in Oak casks of less than 340 litres for a minimum of three years
  • Quality certified by an independent body

VISION

The vision of the Cape Brandy Distillers Guild is to provide a communication and promotion platform whereby focus is assured on the Cape Brandy segment within the broad South African Brandy category.

Its objectives and activities should be seen as complementary to and not in competition with other organisations and efforts to promote and support the overall brandy category.

ADMINISTRATION

The Guild will be managed by the Guild Protector aided by two members all of whom are to be selected by a majority of members. Mr David Hughes has been appointed the first Guild Protector. Any changes concerning the definition of Cape Brandy and Membership fees must be approved by 75% of the members in number and in value of membership fees.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the Guild is to communicate the provenance of Cape Brandy and to simultaneously promote and support the sales and marketing efforts of its members.

MEMBERSHIP

Open to any organisation or person who distils or markets Cape Brandy and who subscribes to the vision of the guild.

FEES

Distillers
Discretionary contribution, minimum of R5000.00 per annum for the first year*.

Marketing enterprises
Discretionary contribution, minimum of R5000.00 per annum for the first year*

*Sales / volume based model under consideration for future fee structures.
